Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth film in the franchise is a film that arrived eight months late. It was worth the extra waiting? Let’s just say it’s a welcomed addition to the series.
The wizardry world knows now that Voldemort is back. As you would think fear is everywhere and the death eaters are attacking even the muggle world. Dumbledore is determined to prepare Harry for the battle he knows is approaching, and to this purpose he also recruits Horace Slughorn as a new teacher in order to find a clue to Voldemort’s power. Meanwhile, Lucius Malfoy disappears after his death eater identity is made public and his son Draco is selected by the Dark Lord himself for a dangerous task at Hogwarts. Snape seems to reveal his true face making a vow to protect Malfoy in order for him to get Voldemort’s wish fulfilled, and do it himself, should the student fail. Harry becomes very suspicious of both of them, but as everyone knows he hates Malfoy no one believes him. And Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix trust Snape of course.
Back at Hogwarts, love is in the air. Ginny Weasley is dating Dean Thomas and Ron is jealous of his little sister, but he also has Lavender Brown after him all the time. Hermione too feels jealous of Ron but decides no to tell him her feelings. And Harry starts to take notice of Ginny.
Once again David Yates is in the director’s chair, and so the style of Order of the Phoenix is still present. And that seems like a good thing now that we’re approaching the final chapters of this saga. After being absent in the last film, series regular Steve Kloves return as the writer and the story is generally well constructed, luckily with no unnecessary expository dialogue. Voldemort is absent from the film, but his presence can be felt all over. Bellatrix Lestrange, played wonderfully by Helena Bonham Carter, leads the way for the dark wizards, while Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy gets to scary levels that his character hadn’t known in the past. With both Harry and Draco taking order from the two most powerful wizards on each side there’s a rivalry between them bigger than what was present before.
There’s not much to tell about the three young actors at the center of the story. They all have proven capable of handling their characters trough the series. The principal new face this time, Jim Broadbent as Professor Horace Slughorn, seems like a fun good hearted wizard, but deep down he hides a secret from Voldemort’s past that tortures him. He likes to connect with talented students and develops a special relation with Harry. And speaking of that, now that Sirius is dead Harry finds in Dumbledore a bigger confident and friend that they were on the past. Harry would do anything that the wise wizard asks of him, and Dumbledore would do anything to protect his student. And I think that was the best thing in the whole movie and makes the end of it all the more tragic.
And what about the half-blood prince? I don’t think that was of much importance to the film an it only made me curious as to why, when he is revealed, he is called by that name.
On the musical side we have once again Nicholas Hooper with a score in the same vein of Order of the Phoenix that fits perfectly to this film. The only ting I really didn’t like was the use cues from his previous score on this one. It really takes you off the picture. But I did liked that he subtly used some motifs from Williams compositions, especially in the Quidditch scene. A more deeper examination of the score is on the soundtrack review page. By the end of the film you are left like you’ve been through a big journey, but nothing really changed, and the losses you suffered were in vain. It is at the end a heartbreaking film with almost no sense of hope for the future. This could be a let down for some audiences, but I personally like this kind of stories. I’m hoping that everything that happened here will have a meaning in the final two films, that will once again be directed by Yates.
